Dr. Tamara “Tami” Stenshoel grew up in Eugene. She is a second generation “Axeman” graduating from SEHS. Both of her parents were the “first generation Axeman“ of the family. Her kids both were third generation “Axeman.”
Four years later she completed 2 Bachelor of Science degrees at the U of O, in Speech Pathology and Audiology as well as Psychology. She also earned her teaching certification at that time. She started out teaching Special Education and completed her Master’s degree in Special Education, with a focus on severely handicapped children 2 years after undergrad.
Following four years of serving as a Special Education Teacher in Eugene, she returned to school to complete pre-med requirements. During this time, she worked as a laboratory technician in Biology at the U of O. She left Eugene to go on to medical school receiving her M.D. degree from OHSU. With her newborn daughter, Nonda and her husband, she left her beloved Northwest for internship and residency at the Arizona Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine, in Tucson. The program was valuable, but she learned the desert was not for her. On completing her residency, she returned to Eugene in 1992 to begin her practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She delivered her son, Gus, one month later. Dr. Stenshoel no longer does obstetrics now.
In 1996, she co-founded the Pacific Women’s Center with Dr. Beyerlein and Dr. Stafl. She has developed a strong practice because of her commitment to women’s healthcare, both physical and emotional. She strives to provide compassionate patient care by taking the time to listen and educate, resulting in a relationship that recognizes the involvement of both patient and physician. She strives to optimize health care to women of all ages. She truly loves her job.
Tami has been raising her children in Eugene and enjoys all the privileges that our area has to offer. She is a strong supporter of buying locally. You will often see her at the Farmer’s Market stocking up on the abundance of organic veggies. She enjoys hiking, skiing, biking, scuba diving, yoga/weight workouts, wine tasting and most important, spending time with her family and friends.
Little Known Fact After completing her Master’s degree she and 2 girlfriends packed up a VW Rabbit with camping gear and toured the US & Canada for a summer, visiting 30 states!
