What does ultrasonography mean?

At Pacific Women’s Center, ultrasonography—also known as ultrasound—is an essential imaging tool that helps us provide the highest standard of women’s healthcare. This safe, non-invasive technique uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of the body, allowing our experienced providers to monitor and assess a variety of women’s health concerns.

During your ultrasound, a skilled member of our team will gently place a device called a transducer on your skin, usually over the abdomen or pelvic area. The transducer sends sound waves into your body; these waves bounce off internal organs and tissues, and are captured and processed to create detailed images on a monitor.

We frequently use ultrasonography to:

• Monitor fetal development during pregnancy: Track your baby’s growth, check for normal development, and provide you with a first glimpse of your little one.
• Evaluate gynecological health: Assess the uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic organs to investigate symptoms such as pain, irregular bleeding, or infertility.
• Detect abnormalities: Identify cysts, fibroids, or other issues that could impact your health.
• Guide procedures: Assist with in-office procedures such as biopsies or IUD placements, ensuring the highest level of safety and precision.

Ultrasonography at Pacific Women’s Center does not involve radiation and is generally considered very safe for both mothers and babies, as well as for all our patients. Our caring staff is dedicated to making your experience comfortable and informative, supporting your health at every stage of life.

What is ultrasonography used for?

At Pacific Women’s Center, ultrasonography—commonly known as ultrasound—is an essential part of the high-quality, compassionate care we provide to women at every stage of life. Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of internal organs and tissues, without the use of ionizing radiation.

Ultrasonography plays a central role in our obstetrical services. Our experienced providers use ultrasound to monitor fetal development throughout pregnancy, assess fetal growth and well-being, determine the baby’s age and position, and detect any potential abnormalities early on. Regular ultrasounds help ensure both mother and baby remain healthy and provide reassurance and important information for expectant families.

Beyond pregnancy, ultrasound is a vital tool for diagnosing and managing a wide range of gynecological conditions. At Pacific Women’s Center, we use pelvic ultrasounds to evaluate symptoms such as pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, or irregular periods. Ultrasound helps us examine the uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic organs to detect issues such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, or other abnormalities.

Ultrasound also assists our physicians in performing minimally invasive procedures, such as guiding needle placement during biopsies or fluid drainage, to increase accuracy and safety. In some cases, ultrasound is used to monitor blood flow in pelvic vessels or to investigate urinary symptoms by examining the bladder and kidneys.

Because ultrasonography is non-invasive, comfortable, and provides real-time imaging, it is an ideal choice for many women’s health concerns. Our commitment is to utilize the latest ultrasound technology to support accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and peace of mind for our patients.

How accurate is ultrasonography?

At Pacific Women’s Center, ultrasonography—commonly known as ultrasound—is one of our most valuable diagnostic tools. As a safe, non-invasive, and real-time imaging technique, ultrasonography plays a crucial role in women’s healthcare, from routine pregnancy monitoring to the assessment of gynecological conditions.

Ultrasound imaging offers reliable and non-invasive diagnostic capabilities, supported by advancements in technology, the expertise of trained healthcare professionals, and a focus on individualized patient care. It plays a key role across several areas of healthcare, particularly in women’s health.

Obstetrics: Ultrasound is a critical tool during pregnancy. It helps determine gestational age, monitor fetal growth, assess placental position, and identify many congenital abnormalities. This information supports safe and informed prenatal care for both mother and baby.

Gynecology: Ultrasound is commonly used to investigate pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, and fertility concerns. It can reveal conditions such as ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and other structural abnormalities, aiding in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Breast Health: In patients with dense breast tissue, ultrasound can enhance the evaluation of breast lumps or other concerns, often in conjunction with mammography.

While ultrasonography is highly effective, it does have limitations. Factors such as body composition or bowel gas can affect image quality. It may also be less suitable than CT or MRI for visualizing deep structures or certain tumors. Nevertheless, due to its safety, lack of radiation, and immediate imaging results, ultrasound remains a preferred initial diagnostic tool in many clinical scenarios. The accuracy and utility of the exam depend on both the technology used and the skill of the provider performing and interpreting the scan.

Ultrasonography is a cornerstone of diagnostic care at Pacific Women’s Center, providing accurate and reliable information for a wide range of women’s health conditions. When performed by skilled professionals in a specialty setting like ours, ultrasound is a safe and essential tool for both preventive care and the diagnosis of specific gynecological and obstetric issues.
